Vampire Halloween costumes are traditionally the most popular Halloween costume for men, women, and children. The vampire has been a movie icon for the past century and a staple of literature for much longer. Vampires of different names and characteristics are part of every culture all over the world. They are demons, spirits, and witches. They are not-quite-human creatures with awesome powers and abilities, and until recently were considered evil and frightening.
The Irish writer Bram Stoker created Count Dracula, perhaps the most famous vampire, in 1897. Recently TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Blade, the Marvel comic vampire hunter, have elevated vampires to cult status. Vampires are much friendlier, have come out of the darkness and into the sun, and are human-like with extraordinary powers. The Twilight saga books and movies, the TV shows and additional demon-related literature suggest vampire fiction appeals in particular to teenagers and young adults.
The myth of the vampire is rooted in ancient European folk tales. It fascinates us, and its incarnation offers a perfect costume for the yearly Halloween ritual. The traditional vampire is a blood-sucking non-human spirit that lives in a coffin. Unable to function in sunlight and therefore waking and rising at night, the vampire sucks the blood from sleeping people, or sometimes animals. Recently vampires have moved out into the daylight, literally and figuratively speaking. But the traditional night stalker has special appeal to Halloween enthusiasts.
The most popular vampire costume is the male costume of white shirt with black pants and a long black cape with a large stand up collar. The wearer completes the costume with fangs.
Vampire costumes have several special effects in common, although there is no right or wrong. The costume is limited only by the imagination of the designer. Common features of most vampire costumes include:
- Wigs
- Teeth and fangs
- Blood
- Capes, especially for the men and boys’ costumes.
- Men and boys costumes are usually black, often contrasted with white shirts and red vests.
- The favorite colors for women vampires are black or red, or a combination of these two colors.
Men often opt for a frightening, bizarre look. They might outfit themselves as Dracula, or more recent personifications such as the Midnight Ripper, Holy Terror, or the Lord of Blood Castle. Each name infers blood-curdling goings-on in medieval castles deep in the forests or high atop a rocky precipice. Women opt for one of two looks: the sleek, sexy vamp look or the bizarre, scarier appearance. They are the Dark Vixen, the Midnight Siren, or the Vampire Queen. These are not so much blood-sucking creatures as not-quite-human creatures with unique abilities.
Nowadays the vampire has moved from the coffin into the home. The “Twilight” movies have moved the vampire from a dark, inhuman, shadowy and scary figure out into the light. This makes the character an even more beloved mythical creature and desirable Halloween character.
Vampire Halloween costumes are available to meet the needs of the most creative wannabes. Choose the character you wish to personify for the evening, and outfit yourself at your nearest Halloween store.
